Sandy Athletic Track was formally opened on 22nd September 2005 by Olympic marathon runner Liz Yelling. The Athletic Track was funded and is owned by Central Bedfordshire Council. From 2005 to April 2011, the Athletic Track was managed by Stevenage Leisure Limited. Since April 2011, Biggleswade Athletic Club has managed and maintained the Athletic Track on behalf of Central Bedfordshire Council.
In February 2017, work commenced on the refurbishment of the Athletic Track by Central Bedfordshire Council and is due to completed by the end of June 2017.
