Other Info:
The track was originally redgra 7 lanes all round and was built in 1970. The Northants Champs were held here in 1983. In 2000, it was observed that the track itself was in good condition and the lanes were marked in the summer but some of the field events were in less good condition - the HJ fan was overgrown and the PV runway was unusable. The infield was a cinder all-weather pitch so no long throws were possible inside the track. There was however what appeared to be a JT runway near the water jump but it pointed towards the side of the track which suggests it was more of a path. There was a small announcer's hut which looked a bit like an Oast House and was dedicated to the memory of Sir Joseph Simpson KBE, a former commissioner of the Metropolitan Police. The entrance and car park to the track was the same as that for the Sports Hall is on Milton Road which is off New Street. The track was upgraded to synthetic with 6 lanes all round and 8 on the home straight sometime after 2001 but before 2015. The track was built over in the redevelopment of the sports centre from 2018 and a replacement track was built elsewhere on the campus.
