Other Info:
The track was originally built in the early 1920s and was a 495y D-shaped cinder one with only one short straight. It was subsequently converted to a oval 6 lane 440y cinder track in 1952 and later adjusted to 400m. In about 1992 the home straight and the outside two lanes from the 200m mark were converted to a synthetic surface and the whole track was upgraded to synthetic in 1996. Both upgrades were done by Charles Lawrence and the track surface is Spiketop. The partial upgrade was funded by the ILEA, Sports Council and the London Borough of Haringey and was based on a Scottish Sports Council initiative at Bathgate while the full upgrade was funded by the Foundation for Sports and the Arts. The reason for the 2 stage development was that there was very little money around at the time. The track has relatively short straights which are about 70m long. The home straight is only 10 lanes wide from the 80m line and so 100m and 110mH races can only have 6 competitors. There is a viewing gallery on top of the pavilion although that appears to be disused. A grant was secured in Jan 2000 to install electronic timing and photo finish equipment. The infield is a grass American football pitch that is used by London Capitals AFC. The gym at the track was upgraded in 2002 with improved weights equipment.
