Other Info:
This was the home of indoor athletics in the UK before the indoor tracks at Birmingham and Glasgow opened. It was first used on 9th Nov 1955 and was a 160 yard unbanked board track but spikes were not allowed. A 250 yards unbanked concrete track was laid out in an adjacent hangar on 17th Jan 1961 although some field events continued to use the board surface in the original hangar. A banked board track of 220 yards circumference opened on 27th Feb 1965 in time for Midland Counties AAA Champs. The track was reduced to 200 metres circumference in time for the UK's first all metric domestic meeting on 18th Nov 1967. The track was used until the late 1980s and is no longer there but have heard an unconfirmed report that it is stored in the dockyard at Portsmouth.
