Other Info:
The track was originally cinder and was upgraded to an Athlaprene synthetic surface in 1983 and first became available for training in Oct 1983. The official opening meeting was not until 21 April 1984 when Bridget Smyth set the still standing UK U17 women's 3000m record of 9:28.9. The floodlights were officially turned on by Mary Slaney on 1st March 1985. The grandstand was opened on 22 April 1990 by the then mayor, Laura Moffatt. There was also an announcer's room with a PA system. In the spring of 2001 the track was pressure washed and remarked and the SP circle was relaid. The track closed in September 2005 as it and the adjacent sports centre were due to be demolished. A replacement track opened on 14th Nov 2005 about a mile away at Thomas Bennett Community College, Ashdown Drive, Tilgate, Crawley.
